You’ll only need your proxy details: server address, port, and (if required) username and password.
1. Open Wi-Fi network settings
1. Click the Apple menu (top left).
2. Choose System Settings… (or System Preferences… on previous macOS versions).
1. In the left sidebar, click Wi-Fi.
2. On the right, find the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to (with a checkmark).
3. Click the Details… / Advanced… button next to that network.
2. Click on the Proxies button, and choose the protocol that you want to use:
3. Get your proxy's information from your Proxy Setup page
4. Fill in the proxy’s information
1. Check the box Web Proxy (HTTP) or SOCKS5 proxy
2. Enter the Server (Host) and Port
3. Select the “Proxy server requires password” option and enter your Username and Password.
4. Click OK (to close the Wi-Fi details window).
5. In System Settings, click Apply if there is such a button (previous macOS versions).
6. Your Mac might briefly reconnect to Wi-Fi — that’s normal.
From now on, this specific Wi-Fi network on this Mac will use that proxy configuration.
Note: SOCKS works at a lower level, so apps that support system proxies will route traffic through it.
(Optional) Disable automatic settings:
Usually, you want only your manual proxy and nothing else interfering.
In the same Proxies panel, you can uncheck:
• Auto Proxy Discovery
• Automatic Proxy Configuration
This helps avoid strange routing or conflicts.
5. Test that the proxy works
To check if traffic is really going through the proxy:
✅ Your proxy is now active.
5. Testing if the proxy works
To confirm:
1. Please open this link.
2. Compare the IP:
• With proxy ON
• With proxy OFF (by disabling proxy temporarily)
If the IP changes to your proxy location → it works
If you enter a wrong password, username, server, or port, you will:
• Get connection errors or
• A pop-up asking for proxy username/password.
If nothing changes, no matter what you do, the app might be ignoring the system proxy (some apps do that).
6. Turning the proxy off (temporarily)
If something doesn’t work, or you don’t need the proxy for a while:
1. Repeat: → System Settings → Wi-Fi → Details… → Proxies.
2. Uncheck the boxes you enabled:
• Web Proxy (HTTP)
• SOCKS Proxy
3. Click OK, then Apply.
Now your Wi-Fi works normally, without a proxy.
