# I bought a package, but my traffic is still frozen

> A traffic top-up buys GB, not time. Renewing or reactivating the subscription is what unfreezes the balance.

A traffic top-up does not unfreeze your balance. Renewing or reactivating the subscription does.

A top-up buys GB, not time. Extra traffic runs on the same clock as your subscription, so if you added GB while the plan was active and the plan has since expired, that traffic froze along with the rest of the balance. Nothing was bought in error.

**Add traffic** is only offered while a subscription is active, so it is not the route out of a frozen balance in the first place. Go to **Billing** and renew or reactivate instead. See [How to unfreeze your traffic](/billing/unfreeze-traffic).

If your renewal date is close, renew or upgrade rather than top up. Both add traffic and keep the subscription running. See [Add traffic](/billing/add-traffic).
