# What will happen to my traffic if I don't use it within a month?

> Unused traffic carries over. What happens depends on whether you renew, lapse, or switch to Pay-as-you-go.

**Unused traffic is not deleted at the end of your billing cycle.** Unused traffic carries over.

If your plan gives you 5 GB and you have 3 GB left when the cycle renews, your new cycle starts with 8 GB.

## What happens in each situation

| What you do | Your remaining traffic |
| - | - |
| Renew, or buy a new plan | **Carries over.** Added to the new plan |
| Upgrade or downgrade | **Transfers** to the new plan |
| Let the subscription lapse, or cancel it | **Freezes.** Held until you start a new subscription, then added back |
| Cancel, then switch to Pay-as-you-go | **Forfeited.** Subscription traffic does not move to Pay-as-you-go |

Moving from a subscription to [Pay-as-you-go](/billing/pay-as-you-go) is not a downgrade. It is a different product, and the balance does not follow you. If you have unused traffic and you are thinking about switching, use the traffic first.

An [upgrade or a downgrade](/billing/upgrade) is different: your remaining traffic transfers to the new plan in both cases.

## Frozen traffic does not expire

Frozen traffic has no deadline and no cap. Frozen traffic sits on your account until a new subscription activates, then it is added back automatically.

To get frozen traffic back, see [how to unfreeze your traffic](/billing/unfreeze-traffic).
