# How does the billing cycle work?

> Subscriptions bill monthly on the same date. Pay-as-you-go has no cycle. Upgrading moves your renewal date.

**A subscription bills monthly, on the same date each month.** Your first payment sets the date, so if you buy on the 14th you renew on the 14th.

**[Pay-as-you-go](/billing/pay-as-you-go) has no billing cycle.** You buy traffic when you need it and nothing recurs.

## What happens on your renewal date

What happens on your renewal date depends on how you paid.

| If you paid by | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Card** | We charge the card on file and add the new month's traffic automatically |
| **Cryptocurrency, YooMoney or MIR** | Nothing. The subscription ends and you buy again when you are ready |

## Your renewal date can move

**Upgrading or downgrading starts a new cycle from that day, and the new cycle replaces the old one.**

So if you renew on the 14th and upgrade on the 27th, the 27th becomes your renewal date from then on. You are not billed twice, because the old cycle ends and the new one begins. See [how to upgrade or downgrade your subscription](/billing/upgrade).

Topping up with **Add traffic** does not move your renewal date. A top-up is a one-off charge alongside the subscription, as covered in [how to add more traffic to your account](/billing/add-traffic).

## What happens to traffic at the end of a cycle

**Unused traffic carries over when you renew.** Unused traffic only stops being available if your subscription stops.

| Let the subscription lapse, or [cancel](/billing/cancel) it | **Freezes** until you subscribe again |
| Cancel, then move to Pay-as-you-go | **Forfeited** |
